Noah is One Week Old

My dearest Noah, how you have changed our lives in just seven days.  I still don't realize you are ours sometimes, and your presence in our lives is surreal.  You are a strong willed little fellow who has one loud pair of lungs.  You came into this world sounding madder than hell, but when you cuddle mommy and daddy, you calm down easily.  You also make the loudest gas noises too, and you love to poop when we get you dressed and ready so we have to do it all over again.  You love to punch and kick like a madman, and you love touching your face.  You have screamed during every diaper and clothes change until today when mommy turned on the hairdryer while daddy changed your diaper.  You were like a different child, and I think we will need a second hairdryer.  You have the most beautiful steel blue eyes I have ever seen, and you make the funniest facial expressions by wrinkling your forehead.  Sometimes I think you look like me, but I'm pretty sure you are more McGreevey than anything.  That's ok, your daddy is pretty handsome! You do really well when placed in your carseat, and you went on two walks this week.  You love your pacifier, and you are a good nurser.

Noah, you have brought mommy and daddy closer together.  We have learned to work as a team and help each other take care of you.  Your birth has also showed us how wonderful and giving people are. We have been blessed by so many friends and family who love us and who love you and have helped us these past few days.  What a blessing you are to us and to them, and I am so glad your birth has brought us closer to the ones we love.

We love you Noah!

Love,
Mommy and Daddy

Noah Sean McGreevey

Happy 1 Week Birthday Noah!

Noah Sean McGreevey entered the world on Wednesday, January 8 at 9:09 am, weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches.  I couldn't have asked for a better birth experience in terms of laboring in the hospital, but planning for Noah's birth up until we checked into the hospital didn't come without some anxiety.

When I found out I had gestational diabetes, I was told my chances for a vaginal birth were lowered by 50% because most gestational babies are larger due to insulin production and blood sugar levels.  I was also told I could not go past my due date due to possible complications.  I remember crying so hard at that appointment because I wanted a vaginal birth so much, and I left the doctor's office determined to keep myself and Noah healthy.  For 12 weeks, I ate eggs almost every single day and more salads with protein than I can remember.  I also walked every day, and made sure any sugars I ate were burned off with exercise.  I survived the holidays by eating just a few sweets to feel normal, but other than that, I watched my sugars the entire 3rd trimester.

When Dr. Estes began checking me at 36 weeks.  I was at 0.  I wasn't worried then, but each week went by with no progress.  At 38 weeks I was getting nervous, and I began trying things to naturally induce from spicy food to walking with one foot on the pavement and one foot on the curb to supposedly help my hips relax.  (yeah I looked ridiculous)  When 39 weeks and 2 days came, I was still at 0 and an induction was scheduled with the option of a scheduled c-section the next morning if no progress was made once the pitocin was started.  I cried and cried at that appointment because I felt like my choice had been taken away.  It may seem silly because there is nothing wrong with a c-section or induction, but I had pictured myself and wanted to experience going into labor naturally during my pregnancy.  After that appointment, I kept trying to get my body ready for natural labor induction.  I tried every trick in the book.  I scheduled an appointment for an induction massage the day before going to the hospital.  The massage was amazing, and the therapist used acupressure points to prepare my body for labor and to improve my circulation.  Many of her clients have gone into labor the day of the massage.

On Tuesday night, we checked into the hospital to begin ripening my cervix.  I was filled with so much anxiety all day, but as soon as we checked in, I felt some peace.  The nurse checked me for dilation at 9:00 pm, and to my surprise, I was 3cm dilated and 40% effaced.  I was also contracting every 2 minutes, but I never realized it until the monitor was placed on my abdomen.  There was no need to use ripening medication, and I was able to rest in the hospital before starting low dose pitocin at 2:30 am to regulate my contractions.  At 4 am, my water broke on it's own and my contractions grew stronger.  I got an epidural at 5:30 am when I was dilated to 5 1/2 centimeters.  I wanted to wait until 6 or 7 centimeters, but the doctor suggested I go ahead and get the epidural since labor was progressing quickly.  I am so glad I took his advice because by 7:00 am, I progressed to 9 1/2 centimeters.  At 8:00 am, they set up the room for delivery, and I began pushing at 8:30 am.  At 9:05, they called for Dr. Estes and told me not to push anymore.  Dr. Estes arrived and was attempting to scrub in when I told Michael the baby was coming, and sure enough Noah made his appearance in the world with Dr. Estes literally catching him with a surgical boot!

So many aspects of that day are a blur, but I am so thankful that I got to experience an even better birth than I expected.  I don't know if my efforts had too much to do with my birth experience, but I am glad I worked hard at keeping my sugars down, eating healthy and trying natural induction methods before the hospital, and I would do it all over again if I had to.

I remember a friend telling me that labor was the easy part.  Raising children is what will kill you.  We've only had Noah for 6 days, and it's been wonderful, but I would have to agree.  The sleep deprivation and needs of a newborn are much more than I imagined, but when he stares at me and makes the most heavenly noises I've ever heard, the sleeplessness and frustration seem to fade.

We are very happy to be the parents of our little Noah Sean.  We aren't too sure what Scarlett thinks just yet, but we hope she is warming up to the little guy!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!  I cannot believe it is 2014 already, and we are a week or less away from officially becoming parents.  How exciting and how scary!  I do not know what happened to 2013.  I think it was the fastest year of my life, and I have trouble remembering most of it.  I would say 2013 was a good year for us.

We started out the year with 21 days of prayer in January, and we began to pray about having children.  It didn't take God very long to give us our answer since we got pregnant in April.  What a surprise of our lives! We were thinking we still had years for children to be present if in fact we were meant to become parents.

May and June are blurs to me.  I was sick and crazy most of May.  We went to the beach for our anniversary, and I didn't enjoy the trip nearly as much as I hoped. I felt so bad for Michel who had to be around me, but he was so great.  We definitely need a beach do-over this year (but then there's daycare to pay for so....).  I started feeling more normal in June as we began to pack up our apartment to move into our house in July.

July and August were spent unpacking and fixing up our house.  I am glad we moved, and I had something to occupy my mind for some time while I was still trying to get used to the idea of being pregnant.  On July 4th, I met many members of my new family at my mom and Steve's engagement party.  We also got to announce our pregnancy along with my new brother and sister-in-law who are due two days before us with a baby girl.

September and October were very busy.  Michael's job kicked into high gear during his busy season, but we managed to take a trip to Arkansas and watch Samford play the Razorbacks.  We registered for McBaby and began putting the nursery together.  I started nesting in September and began organizing and cleaning, and I don't think I've really stopped since.  In October, we traveled back to Arkansas for my mom's wedding, which was really special.  We also had our first shower in October, which was wonderful, and we completed our birth classes at the hospital.

We celebrated our birthdays in November, but with all that we had to buy for the baby, I don't really remember if we actually celebrated much.  Michael went to the Alabama vs. Tennessee game as a 30th birthday celebration.  I stayed home and let him celebrate with his friends.  Being pregnant and tailgating just didn't sound too fun to me, but I think Michael had a wonderful time.  I traveled back to Arkansas again for another shower, and it was amazing as well. I enjoyed seeing my family and friends that I don't get to see too often.  Michael and I spent a quiet Thanksgiving together at home because he was under the weather, and it was nice to spend it together just the two of us.

December has flown by as well.  We managed to put up our Christmas tree and spent our last little quiet Christmas together.  Michael has been at home a lot more this month, and it spoils me to have him here.  I enjoy our time together so much.  We had his staff over for a Christmas shrimp boil a few weeks ago, which was a lot of fun.  I know they enjoy having a few more days off this time of year as well.  We have spent the last few days finishing up the nursery, buying all the necessities we still needed, making and freezing meals, cleaning the house, and packing our hospital bags.  I guess we are as ready to bring our baby home as we can be.

I have so many hopes for 2014.  More than anything, I pray for a healthy baby and a healthy family.  I hope this experience as parents brings us closer to God and closer to each other.  I want more than anything to experience the unconditional love that the Father has for me through being a mom and loving our child unconditionally.  I pray that our faith is increased immeasurably through being parents.  I hope that I slow down and appreciate the importance of every day, whether good or bad.  I want to learn to cherish every moment.  I want to appreciate my family and friends more.  Perhaps we will actually become sentimental, since we are anything but at this point.  I've heard kids do that to you, and you become the couple who keeps nothing to the parents who keep every macaroni necklace your children make.  I hope we enjoy the journey by cherishing the good times and learning from the tough times.

Happy New Year!  Here's to a fantastic 2014 for all of you!
